GMTV Weathergirl teams up with Keith Hall Hairdressing
When ITV and GMTV weather girl Emma Jesson needed a new look for her TV summer road shows she turned to Keith Hall Hairdressing.
Working regularly with TV makeover shows, Keith Hall Hairdressing swiftly created a specialist team led by salon director Sean McMenamin. Favourites from Keith Hall Hairdressing’s professional network - makeup artist
Emma said: “People look to you and look out for what you are wearing. We get letters and emails saying what people like and what they don’t like. Viewers often want to know where they can buy an outfit or an accessory for themselves. “People take your appearance very personally - we get letters complaining if I have my hair cut too short so you are an ambassador and have to make sure you choose the right style. “The summer roadshows in July and August are going to incredibly busy with outside broadcasts every day. I needed to get my hair and clothes sorted out now as they have to be especially adaptable, suitable for filming outdoors - which is very different from the lighting in a studio - and suitable for weather hot spots.” Back at the Keith Hall Hairdressing Nottingham salon – one of a network of 19 - Emma briefed the team: Make up- “I wanted to go lighter. The sunlight is harsh but in a different way to studio harsh lighting. It is easy to get stuck in a rut with your makeup and just put more and more on. If you are not careful your make up ends up like a mask."
Result: “Some great ideas and I love experimenting.” Hair Result: “I completely love my new look. It is still a good length, has a warmer colour and is really funky. I absolutely love it.” Colour: Subtle highlights using natural shades to delicately define the shape, rather than making a statement! Soft chocolate combined with clean gold offered warmth and excitement to a simple style. Cutting: Texture in the hair cut gave height and volume whilst soft layering around the face enhanced Emma’s features. This created a natural look of effortless glamour. Styling: Sean used Wella System Professional products
Colour Saver Shampoo Colour Saver Treatment Enrich Balm Conditioner. Laminates Thermal Hairspray to protect the hair during straightening. Technique: Roots dried with an extra large brush to give additional body while smoothing the hair. Hair styled into a straighter look at the front while retaining the choppy texture at the back. Kept the layers busy. This is a very modern look.
Clothes -“I have a wardrobe at work crammed with clothes - but I only wear 10% of them. The stylist said I suited sharp, clean lines in clear colours. When I looked at my clothes I realised the ones I wear over and over again fit that description. The stylist taught me about body proportions. TV makes you look larger, but wearing the right cut of clothes for your body can make you look two sizes smaller. “In the studio I have only had to consider clothes from the waist up but in the new Outside Broadcasts I will be shown full length so need to consider the full outfit. Clothes need to be serviceable, practical and camera ready.”
Result: “Absolutely amazing experience. I realise I have not been very effective in selecting my clothes.” Frequently recognised for her characteristic “bye bye” sign-off, Emma was originally going to be a veterinary surgeon. She recently had a small part in a British comedy feature film and was one of 15 finalists out of 18,500 vying to be the voice of BT’s Speaking Clock.
Her ‘day job’ as freelance presenter incorporates mainly weather and news features, with plenty of light hearted moments - anything a little eccentric or daring and you know who to ask. See her comedy moments on the BRITS Red Carpet Show last year. She is equally at home in her wellies for Heart of the Country, and records numerous voice-overs. Emma also finds time to do corporate videos, European conferences, events and award ceremonies.
“My hair is quite blonde and goes lighter in the sunshine. I wanted something a bit different, that looks up to date and is fresh. People are often surprised that we all do our own hair and makeup. There are no makeup experts on hand to dab away in between shots.
